Recycling in Schools – The Leeds City Council Option – Associated Waste Management (AWM)
From 1st April 2008 the locally based company Associated Waste Management (AWM) took over the collection of mixed paper & card, and residual waste from all Council premises. As well as maximising paper & card recycling, the collection of plastic bottles & metal cans is now being implemented across the Council.
This contract is open to all schools in Leeds and we are actively encouraging Leeds schools to join the contract. It will save you money.
The contract with AWM is priced on a pay-by-weight basis for general waste. This means every time your general waste bin is collected it is weighed and you are charged depending on how much the bin weighs; recyclate disposal is FREE! The standard break down of costs is as follows;

How does AWM compare to other providers in the Leeds area?
The Commissioning, Procurement and Business Development Team of Education Leeds in conjunction with the Waste Resources Officer at Leeds City Council carried out some research to highlight the cost comparison with two other leading waste providers who offer services to schools.*

As you can see AWM’s pay-by-weight option can offer you considerable savings but what if you doubled the general waste you produced. We also investigated this;

Again AWM proved to be a cheaper option.
The key to saving money is to recycle more then it is free to dispose of!
Terminating your existing contract.
It is notoriously difficult to ‘get out’ of your current waste contract. The industry standard is that contracts roll over on a yearly basis. If you miss a very small window of opportunity, normally 3 months prior to the anniversary, to give a termination notice to the waste provider the contract will continue for a year.
If you want to change to AWM, which we are encouraging all schools to do, the first thing you must do is check your current contract and find out when your window of opportunity is. It could be very soon so do this NOW!! If required Leeds City Councils Waste Resources Officer can come to your schools to help you define what you need. See contact details below.
Then contact AWM to set up your new service and start recycling and saving money.
